25 years of freeing the wrongfully convicted
What started in 2001 at the University of Illinois Springfield with a couple of professors, an investigator, a few undergraduates and a handful of supporters intent on exonerating one innocent man has developed into the Illinois Innocence Project of today, an organization that has brought freedom to 33 innocent men and women in Illinois.
Transformation, perspective, and uncovering truth
The Illinois Innocence Project has spent more than 25 years advocating for justice and working to exonerate individuals who have been wrongfully convicted. As the organization continued to grow its impact and expand its programs, it needed a visual identity system that could support its evolving communications while honoring its history. The project began with an existing logo mark developed by the Illinois Innocence Project. Inspired by the art of origami, the mark abstractly represented the state of Illinois through a series of folded geometric forms.

Building Awareness Through Consistent Storytelling
For the Illinois Innocence Project, social media is more than a communication channel. It is one of the organization's most important tools for raising awareness, educating the public, mobilizing supporters, and advocating for those affected by wrongful convictions. Every post represents an opportunity to share a story, highlight an injustice, celebrate an exoneration, promote educational initiatives, or inspire people to take action. Consistency and recognition are critical. In a crowded digital landscape, supporters need to instantly recognize the organization and connect each message back to its mission.
