The Third Strike Campaign

A Canvas of Stories
We presented all the prisoner's stories and photos on a large canvas of images that you navigate by moving your cursor around – without scrolling or clicking the mouse. The dynamic canvas gives the campaign a three-dimensional feeling

In Their Own Words
All stories are both written and recorded audio. Here, you can have the story told in the words of the prisoner – their own words, spoken by themselves. By having the prisoners tell the story themselves, their words underpin their stories' tragedy and urgency. Hearing the despair on their voice, you don't just get to listen to their story – you get to feel it, too. The accompanying article is divided into separate parts so that the stories follow the rhythm of each strike and the final sentence. Statements from lawyers, families, and judges give power to their personal accounts. Visitors experience the story from the prisoners, who are hopeful and sometimes crying. They hear from judges who feel powerless by the law. And they hear from mothers who missed their sons in prison.

Storytelling with Tangible Results
The value of storytelling can be challenging to measure. But not in this case. The campaign plays a role in lawyer MiAngel Cody's work. She has won the freedom of 16 prisoners, who'd been sentenced to life and death in prison. But the fight doesn't end here. "The campaign is truly saving lives: one story at a time, and one prisoner at a time," MiAngel Cody says
